Subscriber update

Hi friends,

Yesterday I initiated my first paywall, which I’d been planning to do since I first started this Substack. I put a fair bit of thought into it and polled readers a couple of months ago about it. I think paywall models work well in various forms and I subscribe to a number of Substacks that use them, myself. It all made sense.

Then I hit *SEND* and it felt… just not right. I guess I had to try it to find out that the paywall thing is just not me.

This is a community - the sharing of information, the shared making-sense-of-the-world in the comments. I prefer that we do it all together, at the same time. I don’t want paid subscribership to be about access. I’d rather it be about your personal choice to support independent journalism as and when you are able.

To paid subscribers, thank you. This is my main job now, and every paid subscription contributes to my ability to do this.
