Hi friends,
Yesterday I initiated my first paywall, which I’d been planning to do since I first started this Substack. I put a fair bit of thought into it and polled readers a couple of months ago about it. I think paywall models work well in various forms and I subscribe to a number of Substacks that use them, myself. It all made sense.
Then I hit *SEND* and it felt… just not right. I guess I had to try it to find out that the paywall thing is just not me.
This is a community - the sharing of information, the shared making-sense-of-the-world in the comments. I prefer that we do it all together, at the same time. I don’t want paid subscribership to be about access. I’d rather it be about your personal choice to support independent journalism as and when you are able.
To paid subscribers, thank you. This is my main job now, and every paid subscription contributes to my ability to do this.
To all my subscribers, free or paid, thank you for co-creating this community with me.
On that note, I’ve lifted the paywall on yesterday’s post, which you can find below.
To my Australian and New Zealander friends, happy ANZAC day.
International readers, I recommend this explainer by fellow West Australian Substacker ExcessDeathsAU on the history of ANZAC day, explained through a post-peak-pandemic lens.
You’re a dangerously good writer Rebekah, a bright light and powerful voice in dark times. Your selfless paywall decision will surely grow new fruit in due course!
Rebekah. Massive thanks for your understanding that there are some us, like me, impoverished pensioners that just can't afford any subscriptions. Thank you again for removing your paywall.
